01What Vortex is
A shared experience.Not a spectator event.
Vortex creates outdoor music and arts gatherings built around connection: to music, to nature, and to one another.
The dance floor is not a stage with an audience in front of it. Everyone standing on it makes the night — different countries, cultures and beliefs meeting on one beat. What happens there belongs to everyone present, not to the person behind the decks.

02The origin
One dance floorchanged everything.
Grant Dreyer grew up under apartheid. Travelling in the 1990s, he stood on an outdoor dance floor on the beaches of southern India, among people from dozens of countries, cultures and religions, all moving to the same beat.
He had never seen anything like it. South Africa was becoming a democracy at the same moment. He came home convinced the country needed places where people could meet as equals through music and dance — and in 1994 he produced his first event.
03The legacy
Three decadesin motion.
Vortex has produced outdoor gatherings in the Western Cape since 1994 — through changes of place, of scene, and of generation. The sound has moved on. The reason for doing it has not.

04The ethos
Peace. Love.Unity. Respect.
Four ideas that turn a crowd into a temporary community, and give the experience meaning beyond entertainment.
01
Peace
Letting go of judgement — of yourself, and of everyone around you.
02
Love
Care for yourself, for the people beside you, and for the place you are standing in.
03
Unity
Different people meeting as equals through one shared experience.
04
Respect
The freedom to be yourself, and the space for everyone else to do the same.
05The festival worlds

06Beyond the weekend
The experience ends.The impact remains.
A gathering should leave the place and the people around it better than it found them.
01
Local first
Staging, sound, security, catering and market traders are hired locally wherever possible.
02
Temporary by design
Everything built for a festival is taken down again. Nothing permanent is added to the landscape.
03
Land that needs the work
Vortex looks for sites carrying alien-vegetation infestations, and clears them at its own cost.
04
Leave no trace
The site goes home cleaner than it arrived — and clearing up after yourself is part of what visitors are asked to do.
05
Safety, properly resourced
Qualified medical and fire standby, professional event security, public liability cover and municipal compliance at every event.
The journey continues
Two worlds.One Vortex.
Start with the story. Then choose the gathering that calls you.
